A 20-YEAR study shows 98% of people using bear spray during bear attacks were uninjured. Furthermore, those injured (all by grizzlies) didn't require hospitalization.
Dr. Thomas Smith, a Brigham young University bear biologist, and Dr. Steven Herroro, a University of Calgary professor, bear-attack export, and author, published the study in The Journal of Wildlife Management. Smith and Herrero analyzed data collected from 1985 to 2006 that detailed bear encounters in Alaska involving grizzlies, black bears, and two polar bears.
The study also showed that bear spray was more effective than fireamrs: 92% versus 67% effective.
People spraying their tent and equipment, though, believing it would repel bears, were shocked to find the spray actually acted as an attractant.
"The sample size is quite large and the results likely apply to black bears anywhere," said Martyn Obbard, an MNR research scientist. " Pepper spray is lawful for defense against animals, but a prohibited weapon if intended to be used against humans," said Bancroft OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sargeant Barry Freeburn.
