Security Equipment Corporation featured on Modern Marvels TV Show

Security Equipment Corporation (SEC), manufacturer of personal defense and red pepper spray products under the brand name SABRE and SABRE RED, was recently featured on the Discovery Channel’s program Modern Marvels in the episode “Hot & Spicy”.

Using red peppers and other spices in the preparation of foods has gained in popularity in the past decade. Salsa now outsells ketchup as the condiment most used around the globe. Hot Sauce is an estimated 2 billion dollar industry.

The Modern Marvels program details the use of red peppers, chili peppers, spices and other ingredients in the preparation of hot and spicy foods. Capsaicin, which is the active ingredient in red peppers and chili peppers, affects the nerve receptors on the tongue and mouth. Capsaicin causes the brain to believe the nerves are burning. The body reacts and begins healing by sweating, tearing and mucous discharge through the nose.

Several different locations are visited in the episode including the Chili Pepper Institute at the University of New Mexico. Here, peppers are grown and studied with a High Pressure Liquid Chromatography system known as HPLC. The HPLC allows the Institute to objectively measure the heat or pungency of the peppers they grow and study.

The segment on Security Equipment Corporation shows SABRE’s mixing, filling and packaging processes as well as a demonstration on the use of a SABRE Red pepper spray on a subject. Filmed, but not featured was an extensive description of Security Equipment Corporation’s High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) laboratory. SEC’s HPLC lab tests every batch of red pepper spray formulation to guarantee it meets heat specifications. We are also able to measure the CS Tear Gas or mace which is included in some of our SABRE formulas. By testing each SABRE batch we manufacture, we can guarantee our products contain the level of heat and pungency specified.
