Mosquito spray repels those irritating bugs from biting the skin. Ant repellant keeps the insects from walking on counters and invading food supplies in the home. Bear spray does not work to keep away bears; it works to deter them from attacking what looks like a very nice meal or a viable danger. Bear spray should not be used to ward off bears, but rather to stop them from harming you.
Bear spray is created from hot pepper oil. When the spray hits its target, the eyes of the bear, it can work more effectively as a deterrent than a bullet from a gun. Bullets can easily miss their mark and only irritate the animal even more and you certainly do not want to further irritate an angry bear.
When do Bears Attack?
There are few cases of bears attacking humans, but when they are preparing for hibernation, the need for food often overtakes them and anger is heightened. When hunting, you may have no idea a bear is in the area, but he will know you have killed an animal. The bear will not usually target a human but rather make it known that any animal is the given area belongs to him and not you.
Bear spray can be used to give you enough time to get away. It cannot be used beforehand to protect you from a bear’s attack. That is the difference between a deterrent and repellant. So, never spray yourself or your hunting area ahead of time – bear spray is to be used at the time of attack.
