For parents, administrators and pupils alike, campus safety is top of mind as students return to their higher education institution. Here are some reminders to help students stay safe in their home away from home.
- Monitor candles
If your dorm or apartment allows candles, use extreme caution. Keep them away from flammable objects and put them out before leaving the room.
- Be present while cooking
Never leave cooking food unattended, and keep flammable objects away from a hot stove. Be sure to turn your stove and/or oven off when done preparing your food.
- Know your escape routes
Tour your building and plan escape routes for various emergencies. Determine a meeting place a safe distance from your building where you'll meet your roommates in case of fire.
- Test smoke and carbone monoxide detectors
At least once a month, ensure each sensor's batteries are working.
- Install a wireless home security system
SABRE's DIY home alarms are some of the loudest on the market, sounding up to 120dB to help scare off intruders, wake you up and possibly alert your neighbors. These user-friendly alarms offer easy setup, with sensors on either side to install in just minutes. In college? Try the Dorm/Apartment Kit, which includes one Door Stop Alarm, one Personal Alarm with LED Light and one Door/Window Alarm.
