Of the 20 largest police departments in the U.S., sixteen reported a 2016 rise in homicides, reports the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). San Antonio, Chicago and Phoenix saw the largest murder rate increases.
Crime in Chicago made headlines this year, with murder numbers dwarfing those in Los Angeles and New York. Rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults and non-fatal shootings are also on the rise.
While these figures can be concerning, it's important to note that crime is still "nowhere near the levels of two decades ago," according to the WSJ.
