Since the Columbine Shooting, most police departments have changed the protocol and training in Active Shooter situations. Instead of waiting for backup as the old protocol required, Police Officers are now trained to immediately respond to an active shooter and remove the threat before more lives are lost.
In Elkhorn, Indiana last week, two police officers did just that. According to the Associated Press, officers Cody Skipper and Jason Tripp responded within three minutes of the 911 call. It took them approximately 60 seconds to locate and fatally shoot the gunman. He had already killed two people and was threatening the third. There is no question that the response and training of the officers saved lives.
Some security experts disagree with this new protocol. Many believe that officers should still wait for backup, that going in to an active shooter situation alone is a “suicide mission”, which is somewhat true. It is that sentiment that clearly demonstrates the bravery and sacrifice police officers make every day.
