Holiday shoppers tend to be distracted, so it’s no surprise that crime spikes during the holiday season. We also know that
238,000 people over age 12 are sexually assaulted annually, as recently reported by
Texoma’s Fox. These statistics add up to the basic truth that everyone (particularly, women) should be prepared to defend themselves not only around the holiday season, but throughout the entire year. That’s why SABRE and likeminded organizations are making moves to empower women and other would-be victims.

one move that could save your life. It goes like this: When an attacker grabs you by the arm, you break their grip by moving your arm in the direction of their thumb. In the abovementioned article for Texoma’s Fox, the self-defense duo urged everyone who learns this trick to pass the knowledge on. “We can’t get to everybody, but if we show you, and you show somebody else and they show somebody else, then we have a chance to really save lives on a massive scale,”

The video below features the Vegas on The Marie Osmond Show demonstrating this same move and explaining what makes it so powerful:
Another strategy we teach in our
Personal Safety Academy courses is verbal commands. We advise our students, if attacked, to shout something along the lines of “Stop! Leave me alone! Dial 911! I don’t know this person!” Attracting attention to the situation might scare the assailant off and help you gain eye witnesses. In addition, verbal commands like these will keep you breathing and oxygenate blood to keep up your stamina.
