Just a few short weeks ago Penn State’s long time coach, Jerry Sandusky, was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison due to 45 accounts of sexual abuse inflicted upon 10 boys finally bringing the situation to a close. The victims will all probably go through their healing processes differently, but as advocates against sexual assault and safety awareness educators, we hope this conclusion adds some element of peace to their lives. This scandal shines light on the fact that men and boys, despite common belief, are often victims of sexual assault and, as with females, it can have some detrimental life effects. What many don’t know is that in the US, about 10% of all sexually abused victims are males. What’s most disheartening is that often times due to the social stigmas attached to being a “man” in society, male victims struggle through life with the unhealed wounds, because they are so reluctant to come forward with their attacks. Many male victims blame themselves for not being strong enough to fight off their attackers, while some others are left confused by the fact they were physically aroused during the attack. Both of these reasons leave many male victims feeling tormented, isolated, and alienated in society. Because this social issue is rarely talked about, it is important that groups that advocate for sexual assault prevention and victim’s empowerment and protection promote awareness. Male victims should not be neglected or disregarded, because they too often face feelings of anxiety, anger, sadness, confusion, fear, numbness, self-blame, helplessness, hopelessness, suicidal feelings, and much more. The effects of sexual assault can range from physical to emotional, but it is through dialogue and safety awareness education programs that society can expand knowledge on these issues. In our SABRE Civilian Awareness and College Safety courses, we pride ourselves on being sensitive to ALL victims. We strive to teach both men and women prevention and protection techniques, as we understand that sexual assault isn’t just a male issue or a female issue, but a social issue that affects us all. Many believe that personal safety, self-defense, and sexual assault prevention courses only target women, but this is merely a myth. Our courses are open to everyone, because no one individual - male or female - intends or ever deserves to be a victim. A personal safety plan is a much needed tool for all people. Our Dear friend and partner RAINN offers a comprehensive list on the possible effects of sexual assault along with some additional information on this issue.
