Pryor Creek, OK - When you hear the word self-defense, what comes to mind? A person using their best karate moves or Jiu Jitsu techniques to fend off a dangerous criminal?
Self-defense moves may work for some, but defending yourself from an attack is not always about the special moves you’ve learned. In fact, having the right mindset is one of the first steps to protecting yourself from a potential attacker.
Pryor Times spoke with Mayes County Sheriff Mike Reed who is also a self-defense instructor. Reed had some interesting insight on methods of self-defense.
“The number one rule, what it all boils down to, is be aware of your surroundings,” said Reed. “and there's no Karate Kid move for that.”
Reed tells Pryor Times that his teaching philosophy is to give students a few key things they can remember and actually use.
Reed provided the following tips:
When going out, there's no sense in going alone. Plan ahead and partner up, the more the merrier.
Park the car under a street light, away from bushes, hedges and dark corners.
Physically stop before leaving a building to return to the car. Take note of your surroundings.
Before walking out to the car; put your phone away, try to free up your hands and get your pepper spray out.
Reed also encourages people to get a can of good-quality pepper spray.
“Get a good can of pepper spray. Take it out in the yard and practice with it, making sure the nozzle is facing away from you. Know how far it sprays and how far it doesn't spray. Know where to hold it so you don't get it in your face, be comfortable with how to spray it and what it smells like,” said Reed, adding that reactive measures in an attack need to be second nature.
Reed’s secret to self-defense is having the right mindset, keeping and learning to use a can of
pepper spray and being aware of your surroundings.
