Self-Defense Starts with Situational Awareness: Parents -- It’s Not Just About YOU.
As is often pointed out – and often poorly or insufficiently practiced -- much of staying safe depends on staying alert, and in thinking enough ahead so that you can react and respond calmly and usefully instead of panicking. Weapons and tools like Pepper Spray are sometimes exactly what the situation calls for, but it’s best to try and minimize the need to have to use such a powerful device unless absolutely necessary
If you’re a Parent, you have a special obligation. You owe it to your children, especially, not only to practice what you preach, but to do everything in your power to empower THEM – to make sure they are kept safe and sanely aware.
It has been scientifically demonstrated that children learn and absorb from what they see and absorb. Simply saying “do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t cut it (Schuler, 2010).
It’s not enough just to know and practice such things as Situational Awareness as part of your overall personal safety and security. Along with yourself, you need to make sure your family knows and practices these things. Not only will they appreciate the empowerment, but they will appreciate that you are practicing what you’re preaching. They will also appreciate feeling involved and part of all of this. All of this – and all of YOU -- can and should work together.
