Great news for women in the Atlanta metro area. The Decatur Police Department is hosting an ongoing women’s self-defense course – and inviting women to register, free of charge. Sergeant Jennifer Ross announced that women simply need contact her to be added to the waiting list. The next course will be held on Saturday mornings in February 2015.
In
this recent article from the
Decatur Metro, we are reminded that self-defense is about simple, doable strategies and a general safety mindset: “The moves are simple because it is not about brute strength. It is about learning simple techniques, you retain through repetition, that you can use no matter your size or strength. The goal is to defend yourself and get out of danger, not square off and engage an attacker.”
In a society where we are 52 times more likely to experience violence than a car accident, it’s increasingly critical than women – and all people – know how to defend themselves against assault. It’s important that relatively small size and strength isn’t seen as a barrier to self-defense and enhanced personal safety. Classes like the Decatur PD’s are a step in the right direction. This class in particular has received many positive reviews, including this one: “I may be small and not very strong, but I learned the most effective ways to use what I do have.”
