5 Expert-Recommended Rideshare Safety Tips

09 02 2019

Ride-sharing is the new normal. From nights out to work commutes, we trust strangers to get us safely to where we're going. As recently covered in the news on Health.com and Oxygen, SABRE CEO and personal safety expert David Nance shares 5 tips on what you can do to get home more safely.

1. Wait for your ride inside.

Wait inside whatever venue you're leaving - it's safer than requesting and waiting for your ride outside. Try to stay in well-lit and high-traffic areas of the venue.

2. Make sure your driver is an exact match.

The best way to do this? When you open the back seat door (we'll get to that next), ask, "Who are you here to pick up?" This helps to ensure you're getting in the correct car, and that your driver is there to do what they're supposed to do - get you home safe.

Some ride-sharing apps also give you additional information like the make, model, and license plate of the car. Ensure that your driver matches all information provided in the app.

3. Ride in the back seat.

Distance between yourself and the driver is a good thing. If you're riding alone, there's no reason to sit in the front like you might with a close friend.

4. Share your trip with someone.

Most ride-sharing apps allow you to share your journey with friends - do it. That way you can stay safe and have an extra set of eyes on your trip.

5. Be present and prepared.

Be present. Pay attention to your driver's behavior and the route you're taking.

Be prepared. Equip yourself in case of danger. The Safe Escape 3-in-1 Automotive Safety Tool was designed with three key features to give you an extra level of security while riding or driving.

  • Pepper Gel, to defend yourself against an attacker. It's specifically designed not to atomize for safer use inside of a car.
  • A built-in seatbelt cutter, in case of a malfunctioning seatbelt.
  • A window and glass breaker, for a safe escape in case of locked doors or if door jams.

It’s hard to say how you’ll react when faced with a dangerous situation. By taking precautions and always being prepared, especially with personal safety products, the more likely you will be able to react quickly and escape to safety. Consider carrying a stun gun if you're in an area you're not familiar with.

There are 6 million car accidents and 38,000 carjackings in the U.S. every year. The only multi-functional car safety tool of its kind, the Safe Escape 3-in-1 Automotive Safety Tool is designed to provide you and your family maximum security and safety both on and off the road!
