What Is Pepper Spray

Pepper sprays are natural personal safety devices that offer protection at a distance by propelling a liquid made of oleoresin capsicum, the oily resin derived from chili peppers.
Oleoresin capsicum (OC) contains capsaicin, the heat-bearing element of a chili. When capsaicin contacts mucus membranes in the eyes, nose, and throat, it triggers a physical inflammatory response. Along with intense pain, the eyes may swell shut and the respiratory system can be disrupted, which can cause a loss of breath sensation while the capsaicin compounds remain in contact with the mucus membranes.

How Pepper Spray Works

The capsaicin compounds in pepper spray formulas cause inflammation when they contact mucus membranes. In addition to the physical response, pepper spray can cause a psychological response, may cause the target to feel a sense of panic and focus inward on pain. The combined effects can help to incapacitate a person* for up to several minutes, providing an opportunity to escape to safety.

*The effects of pepper spray can last up to 45 minutes, depending on the quantity of spray contacting mucus membranes, how quickly the spray is cleaned from the face, and individual tolerance.
Pepper sprays typically do not cause long-term harm to the target. In rare cases of underlying conditions, the target may experience effects more intensely, for longer, or abnormally.
