Choosing the Right Bear and Mountain Lion Spray for You

03 19 2024

When exploring the great outdoors, you need to prepare for everything. If you encounter a bear, mountain lion, or another aggressive animal, you want to stay safe. Bear spray is a great resource to keep in hand in case you find yourself encountering an aggressive animal on the trails. Whether it’s a day hike or a month-long camping trip, Frontiersman MAX is here to help bring peace of mind on your outdoor adventure.

What is Bear Spray?

Frontiersman MAX Bear and Mountain Lion Deterrent is made with oleoresin capsicum (OC), an oil resin derived from peppers. When inhaled, it can cause an animal’s eyes to close, shortness of breath, and psychological effects such as panic, causing the animal to turn away and seek relief from the irritation.

7.9 oz Canister vs the 9.2 oz Canister?

Frontiersman MAX offers two different canister sizes – 7.9-ounces and 9.2-ounces. Both sizes provide maximum protection by rapidly deploying heavy fog up to 1.32 ounces per 1-second burst and have a massive 40-foot range to create a barrier between you and the charging animal. Both bear spray canisters deploy in 1-second bursts, as opposed to its competitors that deploy all at once, meaning you can reuse your bear spray if the canister is not empty.

The main difference between the two options is the amount of spray time. The 7.9 oz canister has up to 6 seconds of total spray time, while the 9.2 oz canister has up to 7 seconds of total spray time since it contains more content.

We recommend the 7.9 oz canister for short day trips to the mountains and the 9.2 oz canister for overnight trips or if you want a little added protection. However, we recommend bringing more than one canister if you plan to spend an extended time in the wilderness.

How do You Like to Carry Hands-Free?

Having quick and easy access to your spray is vital if you need to run from an aggressive animal. Make sure it’s not packed away in a backpack by utilizing one of these four holster options (compatible with both canister sizes) to keep your spray within reach. All holster options are Velcro-free, eliminating any excess noise from trying to remove your spray that could aggravate a bear.

  • The Belt Holster features an elastic holster sleeve that tightly grips your spray, keeping it from falling out on your hike and slides easily onto your waistband for convenience.
  • The Chest Holster features adjustable straps that hold your spray comfortably and securely against your chest. It also detaches for carrying on your hip.
  • The 3-in-1 Holster combines the belt and chest holster, and also provides a carabiner clip to securely attach your spray to bags or packs.
  • The Waist Belt Holster securely attaches your spray comfortably against the front or back of your waist. It also includes a zippered pocket and MOLLE system to hold your keys and other valuables.
