No Tricks, Just Treats: Tips for a Safe Halloween

Halloween is the one time of year when you can dress up and be whomever you want. SABRE wants you to be safe while you enjoy the holiday. This list of tips will help keep you safe and allow you, especially women, to feel empowered while celebrating.
1. Make a plan before you go out
Whether it’s a friend or family member, let someone you trust know your plans, keep them posted on your whereabouts, and share your location with them.
2. Travel in a group
People in groups, especially women, are less likely to experience harassment or dangers. Stick with your group throughout the night, and make sure you leave with the group you came with.
3. Keep your drink in hand
Keep an eye on your drink and don’t leave it unattended. Unfortunately, there are potential scenarios where unattended drinks are drugged. Be prepared and know how to detect if your drink has been tampered with. If your drink starts to look foggy or there are excessive bubbles, your drink may have been spiked and you should avoid drinking it. If you plan to drink a lot, make sure you are going out with a trusted group of friends and that someone in the group is drinking responsibly.
4. Don’t walk anywhere alone!
As we mentioned earlier, staying in a group is always ideal, but there are times when you may find yourself alone. If this happens, know how to prioritize your safety. Find a well-lit area, call a ride-share service, and let someone know where you are. You don’t want to find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation walking by yourself late at night.
