Summer Running Guide: Tips to Stay Cool and Safe

06 24 2024

Running is an excellent way to stay fit, clear your mind, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or just starting your fitness journey, running during the summer comes with its unique challenges, and unfortunately, runners can find themselves in vulnerable situations. But don't worry—we've got you covered. Read on for essential running safety tips and running safety products to keep you safe and secure on your summer routes.

1. Run Early or Late

Opt for early morning or late evening runs when temperatures are cooler. Unlike the winter months where it's challenging to fit in a run while the sun is out, the longer summer days make it easier to run in daylight without the peak heat hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

2. Stay Visible

If you do find yourself running during the darker hours, make it easier for oncoming drivers to see you with the Runner Pepper Gel with LED Hand Strap. The hand strap ensures the maximum-strength pepper gel is always within reach without being cumbersome and impacting performance. While the LED light offers additional visibility, helping you stay seen by others on the road.

3. Plan to Switch Your Route

Before you lace up your shoes, you always plan your route. If you run the same route at the same time every day, you should frequently switch it up so no unwanted bystanders know where they can find you at a specific time. Familiarize yourself with the new route, and share it with a friend or family member.

4. Don’t Forget Sun Protection

Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin, wear a hat to help shade your head and face, and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

5. Stay Hydrated and Wear Moisture-Wicking Clothing

Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that help keep you cool by wicking sweat away from your skin, and drink plenty of water and electrolytes before, during, and after your run.

6. Consider Other Self Defense Tools

Make the Pepper Gel with Hand Strap your dedicated safety companion on your next run. It’s easy to carry and provides maximum stopping power. The pepper gel formula has a 12-foot range, and unlike traditional pepper sprays, the gel formulation minimizes the risk of blowback and sticks to the attacker.
